Safety Measures for GAS HAZARDS
Safety Measures for GAS HAZARDS
1. No unauthorized person should go to a gas hazardous area.
2. No person should take rest near gas lines/hazardous areas.
3. Even at the slightest indication as abnormal smell, headache or
giddiness felt by any person working in an area where there is possibility of
gas leakage, one should immediately leave the place, go into fresh air and then
report to the Supervisor/concerned people.
4. Keep all types of flames, lighted cigarettes and spars etc. away
from the area.
5. Never enter a furnace, tank, gas holder, gas mains or other closed space where gas is suspected to be present, without checking for presence of gas and without a gas mask or any such safety appliances.
6. Even a man enters such a place with all safety appliances, and observer must be stationed outside in a gas free atmosphere and a safety belt or life-line should be attached to the man inside, so that in case of distress, he can be taken out immediately.
7. If gas leak is in open area, cordon off the area and hang a notice
so that nobody goes near.
8. Shut off the gas valve or isolate gas holder from system.
9. While operating the bleeder, see that the gas is not allowed to flow in areas where people are working. Evacuate them if necessary. The wind direction must be considered while bleeding or purging gas lines.
10. It is quite possible, due to wind directions, the leakage at the top of one place may affect men working on the top of other place.
Tips during Emergency
a) Be calm, don't get panicky.
b) Decide the direction of the wind.
c) Do not run, walk quickly to the side perpendicular to the wind
direction.
d) Cover your nose with wet cloth and breath through it.
e) If possible, use any available vehicle to move away.
